New Gold’s New Afton Mine achieves ISO 50001 system implementation
Mining operations are big energy users and mine operators can have significant impacts on how energy efficiently materials are processed. That’s why Prism Engineering has been working with Andrew Cooper, Energy Specialist at New Gold’s New Afton Mine to develop a comprehensive Energy + Engagement Action Plan for the Kamloops mine. Supported by BC Hydro’s Industrial Energy Management coaching program, the goal of the Action Plan is to create a culture of energy conservation at the mine and to have New Gold employees become actively involved in energy management in their work.
The plan is modeled on a four pillar engagement strategy, including communication activities, competency training, engagement initiatives and formalized reporting. These strategies were also established to support New Afton’s work to become the first Canadian mine with ISO 50001 Energy Management Systems certification.

Baki Cvijetinovic Joins the Prism Team
We are pleased to welcome Baki Cvijetinovic as a new member to our Mechanical Team. Baki brings a strong background in mechanical design and implementation of plumbing, fire protection and HVAC systems as well as boiler and chiller plants retrofits. He has worked on a full range of residential, commercial, and institutional projects for both the private and public sectors. His design expertise is complemented with experience in project management, site supervision and construction administration. Baki’s focus on team cohesion and technical clarity helps him deliver successful results and create strong relationships within the industry.

Q. What drew you to Prism?
Baki: I found it refreshing to see a company focusing on improving existing buildings. Existing buildings seem to get forgotten when all attention is on the “up and coming” buildings, however there is so many exciting things we can do to improve and modernize what we already have. It’s a bit obvious to say, but there are a lot more existing buildings than new ones in construction. By focusing our attention in this area, I feel we can really make a difference by using energy more efficiently and move towards sustainability.
Q. What kinds of projects do you find most interesting and why?
Baki: Any kind of project can be the most interesting, what really matters for me is the people I get to work with and the teams that we form. I am a very outgoing individual and I am always excited to work with new faces as well as old friends. I have also seen the power of a strong team. A strong project team can overcome many obstacles with ease and efficiency, and if positive relationships exist between team members, things just magically flow. The excitement is always there, even through the toughest times. I strive to elevate the people I work with and to create strong relationships that grow into functional teams.
Q. What is your proudest accomplishment?
Baki: As a self-proclaimed martial arts nerd, I would like to say that it is attaining my black belt in Karate. The whole process started when I first joined karate 9 years ago. It tested my spirit, mind and body. When I finally put on that belt for the first time, my exhausted body could barely support itself but it was in this moment that I felt proudest, reflected on all the things I learned and the wonderful people I met through the process.
