Interior Health engaged Prism to conduct an energy study for the Lillooet Hospital & Health Centre in BC. The study describes potential measures to replace the existing two propane-fired domestic hot water (DHW) boilers with electric air-to-water heat pump water heaters. The study was conducted as part of the CleanBC Custom Program (low-carbon electrification) administered by BC Hydro. This program offers financial assistance for the study and implementation of the recommendations.

Full replacement of the existing propane DHW system with heat pumps was not recommended due to the electrical capacity required to cover the peak load. The heat pump DHW preheat system was recommended and implemented instead. This solution offsets a large portion of the propane load but still utilizes the existing propane boiler for peak loading and redundancy. The anticipated reduction of GHG emissions from this measure is 37 tonnes of equivalent CO2(eCO2) per year, or 9% of site emissions.
