Waterless Urinals
Waterless urinals have been in use since 1991 although most
installations are in the United States. Installations in Canada,
in particular in the Lower Mainland, must be approved by the
Authorities having jurisdiction and the Building Code of Canada.
This type of Urinal functions on gravity flow and uses no water
thus a savings of 1.0 to 3.0 gallons per use, compared to a conventional
urinal. They connect to standard 2” drain lines and resemble
conventional wall hung urinals. Significant savings are achieved
since water and sewage charges are practically eliminated for
this fixture. There is an ‘Eco-trap’ insert that
contains a liquid that forms a barrier which prevent sewer vapours
from escaping to the room. This cartridge must be replaced approximately
every 6 months. Refer to the following table
for a typical office with 50 occupants for the potential savings
in water consumption and cost.
| No. of toilets |
No. of occupants |
Water use reduction/day |
Water use reduction/year |
Annual cost savings |

In retrofit applications, the replacement of a waterless urinal
can be paid back in 4-6 years.
