University of British Columbia

The Challenge:

The University of British Columbia (UBC) Sustainable Development study states: “UBC seeks to ensure its long-term economic viability through responsible and effective management, the development of a comparative advantage in its educational and research activities, innovative methods to calculate and account for external costs, to identify cost-savings...” (excerpt). With a campus of over 250 buildings and a combined area of approximately 7 million square feet, UBC needed help in their initiative to reduce campus energy consumption 20% below 1998 levels by the year 2004, while maintaining building “period” luminaires in heritage-designated buildings. With buildings ranging from 1920s vintage to those constructed in the 1980s, there was a wide variety of equipment in use.

The Solution:

Prism determined the savings potential that lighting upgrades would provide for the entire campus. Detailed lighting audits consisted of on-site physical evaluation and systematic review of buildings of various ages and use. Working closely with architects and various contractors, Prism carried out the project in a two-phase process: Phase I consisting of in-house construction, and Phase II being the design-build process. Over 50 buildings were audited.

The Impact:

Energy savings of over 16 million kWh annually were realized, translating into yearly savings of more than $600,000.
