The
University of British Columbia (UBC) Sustainable Development
study states: “UBC seeks to ensure its long-term
economic viability through responsible and effective management,
the development of a comparative advantage in its educational
and research activities, innovative methods to calculate
and account for external costs, to identify cost-savings...”
(excerpt). With a campus of over 250 buildings and a combined
area of approximately 7 million square feet, UBC needed
help in their initiative to reduce campus energy consumption
20% below 1998 levels by the year 2004, while maintaining
building “period” luminaires in heritage-designated
buildings. With buildings ranging from 1920s vintage to
those constructed in the 1980s, there was a wide variety
of equipment in use.
