Simon Fraser University, Burnaby Campus

The Challenge:

Simon Fraser University (SFU) had two objectives: reduce operating costs, and improve energy efficiency (and thus the production of greenhouse gas emissions). After over two decades of energy management improvements, SFU questioned if further potential existed for energy management.

The Solution:

Working with an in-house energy management team, Prism developed an Energy Management Action Plan for SFU. In-house energy management training for the university’s technical and facilities staff was then carried out to provide them with the fundamentals of energy management, and to participate in the energy management program. A night audit was done to identify night electrical loads and opportunities for load reduction.

In 2002, a detailed lighting audit was undertaken. Prism continues to serve the university’s energy management needs with an impending implementation of a lighting upgrade project.

The Impact:

Even after reducing its energy intensity by 20% from 1980 to 2000, SFU has set targets to further reduce electrical energy use by 15%, natural gas energy use by 10%, and greenhouse gas emissions by 10% by the year 2005/06.
