Renovating one of Vancouver’s top extended-stay hotels with new high efficiency - 5 Green Keys design

SilverBirch Hotels & Resorts manages over twenty independent and franchise properties across Canada, including the Marriott, Hilton, and Best Western hotels.

Challenge

The Residence Inn, a 21-storey Marriott Hotel in the center of downtown Vancouver, opened its doors in September 2012 after a 10 month renovation. The purpose of the renovation was to completely transform the aesthetics of the original Cascadia Hotel while updating the building systems to meet Marriott’s five-star environmental commitments. Prism Engineering was hired to design and oversee the construction and implementation of new mechanical, electrical, and plumbing systems, as well as design a new power distribution layout.

Solution

Marriott Hotels, known for their attention to quality and guest comfort, have detailed requirements for the building systems that support these high standards. They are also committed to maintaining environmental standards that call for high efficiency equipment and design.

Prism worked closely with architects, contractors, and Marriott staff to respond to the challenge of bringing the old building up to code. Almost every aspect of the hotel was renovated and the majority of systems and equipment were upgraded or completely replaced.

The list of mechanical and electrical renovations designed and implemented by Prism include:

  • installation of a high efficiency condensing boiler plant
  • installation of high efficiency variable speed drive chillers and pumps
  • replacement of pneumatic controls with electronic controls
  • replacement of all standard efficiency T12 fluorescent lights with T8 fluorescent lights
  • replacement of all incandescent lights with compact fluorescent lights

Results

The results of the renovations are stunning. The hotel now features spacious studios and suites equipped with full kitchens for extended visits. As a ‘5 Green Keys’ Eco-Rated Hotel, the new building systems provide a very comfortable stay for guests while improving reliability and saving the company money in reduced maintenance and operating costs.
