Coast Westerly Hotel

The Challenge:	The Coast Westerly Hotel in Courtenay, BC on Vancouver Island was selected as a demonstration project by BC Hydro PowerSmart for innovative energy management for the hospitality sector. The objective was to demonstrate applications of energy management that exceed typical energy management projects while still being cost effective for the owner.
The Solution:	Prism conducted a detailed energy audit in 2002. The audit evaluated innovative technologies beyond HVAC and lighting systems. The analysis included evaluating measures for laundry, kitchen and pool areas, solar voltaics, solar domestic hot water (DHW) and heat recovery from grey water. Thirteen energy and water management measures were recommended with annual savings projections of 725,000 kWh for electricity and 1,200 GJ for natural gas.
The Impact:	Utility cost savings are estimated to be 36% of 2001 costs. Greenhouse gas savings are estimated at 83 tonnes of CO2 equivalent per year. The internal rate of return (without incentives) is 16% with an NPV of $290,000. The project is expected to be implemented in 2003.
