B.C. Place Stadium, constructed for the 1986 World’s Fair, is the largest air-supported domed stadium in the world. Able to accommodate more than 60,000 people, the stadium is home to the BC Lions football team and is a popular venue for trade shows and concerts. The lighting control system at BC Place was in severe need of an upgrade. The system was inflexible, difficult to maintain, and had little room for expansion. While the lights do need to be on for events and trade shows, different levels of lighting are required depending on the event. Furthermore, the existing system did not provide fine control for custodial staff to turn on the lights only in the areas where they were working — all of the lights in the building had to be on during cleaning hours. A new lighting control system was clearly needed to meet the needs of the building owners, and to improve the energy efficiency of the facility.
