Science World

The Challenge:

One of the most recognizable landmarks in Vancouver, Science World is a multi-use facility that contains galleries of hundreds of interactive exhibits and theatres. The Geodesic dome, with an area of 33,530 square feet, is 155 feet tall and covered with 391 lights that shine 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. This structure was built for one-time use (Expo 86) and for a one-time cost, with no focus on energy efficiency. As a model for science and sustainability, Science World needed to upgrade the building systems for its on-going operation.

The Solution:

Prism completed a feasibility study which provided the scope and scheduling for a retrofit project under the BC Hydro PowerSmart Program. Energy efficiency measures included conversion of incandescent and fluorescent lighting, recommissioning of the direct digital control (DDC) system, and conversion of the main air handling system. Ductwork changes were made to the Omnimax air handling system to provide better air movement and distribution, thus improving both energy use and comfort in the theatre. A professional mountain climber was even contracted to replace the exterior dome bulbs with more energy-efficient lighting!

The Impact:

A net overall savings in electrical demand of over 150 kW and an energy consumption of 1,180,000 kWh per year was realized — an estimated 37% reduction in energy use for the facility.
