BC Hydro's Advanced Energy Office Project

In 2011 Prism Engineering participated in BC Hydro's Advanced Energy Office Demonstration project, a new pilot project that takes a holistic approach to upgrading office spaces. For Prism it is an opportunity showcase different technologies forour clients and to show our commitment to continuous improvement.

BC Hydro's Advanced Energy Office project recognizes that high quality lighting design, efficient plug loads and power management, HVAC performance and advanced metering are key elements in energy efficient office design. As a demonstration project, Prism has made improvements to our office space in all of these key areas.

The lighting system retrofit in the open office layout included the installation of 49 fluorescent luminaires, which are individually controlled at each workstation via the user's personal computer. Photosensors in each zone dim the lights to counterbalance the increase in light levels due to incoming daylight, while occupancy sensors monitor activity around the workspace to ensure lights stay on only when needed. The office layout was designed to maximize window exposure to natural daylight throughout the office. In addition, we installed LED downlights, dimmable T5 lighting (with energy saving lamps) and occupancy controlled T8 lighting systems in private offices and the boardroom.

We purchased Energy Star appliances and have managed our plug loads by setting equipment on timers and power bars and modifying power saving settings on computers. Heatpumpsare controlled by digital programmable thermostats and we have programmed nightly and weekend unoccupied setbacks. We also installed an energy dashboard at the office entrance, which shares consumption information with staff and visitors and helps us to track our energy use.

Post retrofit monitoring of results have commenced and will be shared in late 2012.

  • 1-8' suspended fluorescent luminaire with 4-28, 30 or 32 watt T8 lamps with instant-start electronic ballast.
  • Controlled by passive infrared (PIR) vacancy sensor wall switch and luminaire mounted daylight sensor.
