British Columbia Institute of Technology (BCIT),
Burnaby Campus

The Challenge:

This multi-building institution was facing a growing population and rising operating costs. With local utilities and government promoting improved energy management, an innovative solution was needed to determine the savings potential and to make these buildings operate more efficiently.

The Solution:

Prism performed a walk-through lighting and mechanical audit, and developed an Energy Management Action Plan to identify the magnitude of potential savings and develop a business case.

The next phase was a detailed lighting audit of over 40 buildings. Energy efficiency measures included replacing, modifying or repairing every light bulb, lighting fixture and lighting control to improve lighting quality as well as reduce energy consumption. The project was approved and implemented in 2003.

The Impact:

Annual energy consumption savings of more than $200,000 are projected for the lighting upgrade. BCIT has committed to improve energy performance and reduce greenhouse gas emissions by registering with Natural Resources Canada (NRCan) and an Energy Innovator. The college’s goal for 2005/2006 is to reduce energy consumption by 20% of 2000/01 levels.
